W: So, Bill, what do you usually do on the weekend?

M: I often go to movies with friends on Friday night. How about you, Sarah?

W: Well, I love seeing musical plays on Broadway with my friends. Have you been to many?

M: Not really. I saw one when I moved to New York and another when my parents came to visit, but not ever since.

W: Hello, Helen Smith speaking. Can I help you?

M: Hello, this is David. Could I speak to Mike, please?

W: I’m afraid he’s not available at the moment. Would you leave a message?

M: Yes, I’m calling to cancel the meeting we scheduled for this afternoon.

W: OK. Let me take this down. Could I have your name again?

M: Certainly. It’s David Stone.

W: What are you working on?

M: My presentation for next week.

W: Oh, it’s about the London Paralympics (残奥会).

M: Yeah. I made this chart showing the number of participants from each country and the number of medals they won. Great Britain had 294 athletes and won 120 medals.

W: Wow! How about countries with fewer athletes?

M: Well, Japan sent 135 athletes and won 16 medals. Spain had 133 athletes and won 42 medals.

W: What about France?

M: France and Spain had similar results, but France won three more medals. They sent 158 athletes.

W: Martin, we really must decide where we want to go this summer. I’ve always wanted to visit France. Why don’t we drive through France the first week and then, down, into Italy for the second?

M: That’s a great idea. When we get to the bottom of Italy we could go on the ferry to one of the Greek islands.

W: But if we stay in the north of Italy, we could drive into Switzerland and see that for our third week.

M: OK. Let’s go up into Switzerland and then we could drive back into Italy and continue driving down to southern Italy where we could catch the ferry to one of the Greek islands for our fourth week. I’d love to go to Rhodes.

W: Then from Rhodes, how about getting another ferry and spending our fifth week in Turkey? From there we could drive back up through ex-Yugoslavia, into France and then into England.

M: Before coming back into England there are Germany and Austria, too. But I don’t think we can see all these places in six weeks, can we?

W: No, not really. So let’s spend our last week on the west coast of England, driving around Cornwall.

M: It all sounds wonderful.

MIt’s burning hot, isn’t it?

WYes, look, the sweat is running down my face.

MI’ve also heard nine persons died of hot weather in Shanghai.

WAbsolutely right. The yellow alarm has also been stated recently.

MHas an air-conditioner been installed in your home?

WI am not used to it. I’d rather stay in hot weather without using it.

MBut I like living in a room with one. Whenever I come home, I turn it on immediately.

WBetter be careful with it. Using it too much can make you ill.

MThanks, but it is too hot now. How do you cool yourself?

WI usually eat some ice-cream.

MI remind you of your stomach. You had stomachache several days ago.

WYes, I will. I can’t get rid of it recently. If not, I can’t go to sleep quickly.

W: I’m afraid I have a problem here.

M: Oh dear! What’s the trouble?

W: It’s this disc you sold me

M: Doesn’t it work?

W: Oh yes, it works, but it’s the wrong music.

M: You’ve bought the wrong one?

W: Well, yes and no. The cover says Rachmaninov and the disc itself says Rachmaninov. But when I play it, the music’s Tchaikovsky.

M: Are you sure?

W: Oh, yes! I can’t be wrong about that. I’ve finished up with the music I can’t stand. Tchaikovsky’s is too noisy.

M: I’ll just go and fetch the manager for you.

W: Barbara told me about their trip to Puerto Rico. I do wish we could take a trip this summer.

M: Well, dear, maybe we can. I may have enough time then for us to take a real vacation.

W: How about going to California? I’ve got some relatives there, you know. We might be able to stop and visit them.

M: That’s a good idea.

W: Shall we tell the kids where we’re planning to go?

M: Yeah, we should tell them.

WHi, Bob! I am so glad that you came.

MOf course I'd come. I couldn't think of a better chance to see all my old friends.

WIt's hard to believe that it's been ten years since graduation.

MHow time flies! How are things going with you?

WIt's only recently that I've been able to start settling down. How about you? Are you still with Jenny?

MYeah, Jenny and I got married right after graduation. It was hard for the first three years — I was supporting us both while she continued her studies — but now things are getting better. I work as a manager in a trade company and she's working at a law firm. It's all started to come together and we're finally able to make a life for ourselves.

WOh, that sounds wonderful. I have always known you two would make it. I hope I can keep in better contact with you.

MDefinitely! Actually, we just moved into a new place. There's a housewarming party this Saturday, if you are free.I know Jenny would love to see you again and it should be a good party.

WSounds great! I am free this weekend and I'll be there.

WTake careYou are driving off the road.

MI’m sorry I wasn’t noticing.

WYou seem to be quite sleepy. Did you sleep well last night?

MI didn’t sleep the whole night.

WWhy?

MI watched TV until midnight. I was about to go to bed when my father suddenly got ill. So I had to take him to the hospital.

WIs your father seriously ill?

MYes, very. The doctor says he has to stay in hospital for some time.

WBut what’s wrong with him?

MHe has something wrong with his heart.

WWhy not ask for leave this morning?I suggest you not go to work this morning and take a good rest at home.

MNo, I can’t. I’m still new in the office.

WThen, let me drive the car.

MThank you.

M: Great party, isn’t it?

W: Yes. And the food is wonderful.

M: By the way, I’m Tony.

W: Hi, Tony. I’m Susan. Nice to meet you.

M: Me, too. Are you from the States?

W: Actually, I was born in Germany. My dad’s German. But I grew up in New York. How about you?

M: Oh, me, I grew up right here in Portland.

W: Ah, so you’re a local boy. What do you do?

M: Right now I’m in school. How about you?

W: I’m an art teacher at Grant High School.

M: Really? I’m an art student in college here. I graduate this year.

W: No kidding?

M: Yes. There’s an exhibition for my graduation next week. I have a couple of paintings in it. Would you like to come?

W: I’d love to. That would be excellent.

M: Great. The first day is on Monday. It’s at the Art College.
